Recent research conducted jointly by OutsourcingCenter and Wipro Technologies revealed a trend and shift in motivations for outsourcing R&D processes to an offshore service provider. The research, which was not a scientific study, polled visitors at the OutsourcingCenter portal during March 2006. It asked Chief Technology Officers, Product Managers and Engineering Managers to choose which of the following five factors driving the outsourcing of R&D processes today is their main benefit achieved through globalized delivery of R&D processes: • Access to 24/7 global R&D processes • Ability to exploit pools of skilled labor • Reduced R&D costs • Reduced time to market for innovations • Ability to tailor goods and services to particular markets This paper looks at the drivers or motivators for outsourcing R&D processes offshore as well as the evolving outsourcing strategy surrounding capturing value within the framework of those changing motivators.
